Two Pella Middle School students were injured after a stabbing occurred at Pella Middle School before the school day on Wednesday, Nov. 20, according to the Des Moines Register. The Register reported that the suspect was in police custody and the affected parents were contacted.
The Pella Police Department held a press conference at 11 a.m. and said in a Facebook post that they had more details regarding the incident.
“A 14-year-old student at Pella Middle School used a knife to assault multiple students in the cafeteria. Two students sustained minor laceration-type injuries but did not require medical transport,” the department said. “Pella Ambulance personnel were on-site to treat the injured students and assist with reunifying them with their parents. Additionally, crisis canines Nitro and Walter were deployed to help calm students as a result of the incident.”
Coincidentally, on Wednesday, Nov. 20, Norwalk High School practiced its lockdown drill to prevent and defend against these situations in the future. After multiple incidents that have happened in schools nationwide, schools are taking precautions and steps to try and prevent these situations from ever happening.
Sophomore Ethan Winslow was a Norwalk student who had heard about the stabbing. Winslow said this was a shocking occurrence.
“I cannot believe this happened, especially at a middle school,” Winslow said. “At this level kids should be feeling safe and like the environment that they learn in, but instead they have to worry about these situations.”
