Valentine’s Day is known as the Love holiday. Some people celebrate with significant others, and others will spend the holiday not celebrating it, but how are the students of Norwalk celebrating it?
Jaxxon Montinguise said Valentine’s Day is over-saturated and a “sham.”
“I think Valentine’s Day is a one big giant scam that holds nothing of value to what the holiday is really about, love.”
Jaxxon says that Valentine’s Day is only seen as about money and gifts instead of love.
“Valentine’s Day is nothing more than a trick that makes you spend money on stupid things like chocolate and stuff animals,” he said. “And when you don’t buy something for that special someone, you’re demonized by everyone for not ‘caring,’ which is stupid because if you need to buy something to show your love to someone, then what’s the point of having that relationship in the first place?”
While Jaxxon said the holiday is over-saturated with gifts, one couple said they think otherwise, that being Izzy Rosenberg and Mia Wilshusen.
Mia said Valentine’s Day day is a great holiday that she loves celebrating.
“Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite times of the year,” she said. “I love how I can spend time with Izzy and we both get each other gifts, and then we get to hang out and maybe watch a movie or a TV show.”
Izzy said the holiday is a great way to hang out with his girlfriend and not have his friends criticize him for not hanging out with them.
“Lowkey, it’s gas,” he said. “It’s the only day of the year where I can hang with Mia, and none of my friends can say anything about how I ‘never spend time with them,’ and I can just hang with Mia and not get criticized by them. It’s just awesome.”
Jaxxon said he believes the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day is to show your love through actions instead of gifts.
“If you truly love someone, you should show affection every day by asking how their day was or how are you doing instead of ‘showing your love’ with chocolate or a stupid bear with a heart,” he said.
