Have you wanted to create art but don’t know where to start?
Norwalk has had its afterschool Art Club for many years, as it is a place for kids to come and create art and discover what they like. Students, led by Angela Davidson, have created dozens of pieces of art, whether they were for themselves or for someone else.
Junior Jessi Gerritson said she joined Art Club because she wanted to meet people after moving here last year.
“I’d been into art for a while, though I thought getting into Art Club when I came here would be a good way to bond with others who shared the same interest as me,” she said. “I felt it was a good way to make new friends as well as have a space to be creative and authentic.”
A couple of students have said that Art Club is a great place to have social time with your friends after school is out.
“I would say that getting to spend social time with my friends is a great part of Art Club,” said newcomer Zay Zay Guzman, a sophomore.
Gerritson had said that the relationships she formed at Art Club are just as important as the art itself.
“The people in the club make it feel like a group, not just a club or something for school,” she said. “It felt more like a place you could go and sit down and just talk to people, you know?”
Angela Davidson is the high school art teacher. She teaches classes like painting, metals and jewelry, and sculpting. She is also the head of Art Club.
“I had an Art Club at the place I had previously taught,” she said. “I created Art Club for students to have activities. It gives them another opportunity to experience art making. I like to create activities for students to just have fun and make some friends.”
