Norwalk students are back in action

Norwalk High School classes begin for the 2023-24 school year

During the first full week back to school, Norwalk students and teachers could be found all around the school as they began their new classes and routines. Some students had started online DMACC courses, while others began electives such as woodworking and photography.

Brayden Plourde
Brayden Plourde, Staff Writer
Brayden Plourde is a sophomore at NHS taking his first semester of journalism this year. Brayden is involved in multiple sports such as football, swimming, and track. One of his favorite things to do is watch movies, and one of his top picks is Ace Ventura Pet Detective. Something interesting about Brayden is that he was born in Rhode Island and has lived in 4 different states. “I want to be a sports journalist so it's a great opportunity to see if this is something I want to do when I'm older," he said.
Gabby Bussanmas

Gabby Bussanmas is a junior at NHS and first-semester journalism student. Bussanmas is interested in reading and writing, especially about social issues and new laws. She is involved in school groups such as MVP, and is the second youngest of seven siblings. “It’s definitely weird because I’m going to be one of the last ones to leave the house,” she said. Bussanmas said she is not originally from Iowa. “I’m actually from Louisiana, I lived there for 12 years,” she said. “I like having all four seasons, I love snow and hate the heat.” Bussanmas is considering a career in journalism, and sees The Spear as a way to learn about the topic. “I’m interested in trying to become a journalist, this could be a good start to see if I like it,” she said.

Tyler Davis
Tyler Davis, Staff Writer
Tyler Davis is a Senior at Norwalk High School, and first-year staff writer for The Spear. Davis likes to be outdoors and play sports, such as basketball and playing football with his dad, and enjoys country artists such as Creed Fisher. “I like to read drama books, as well as books about the history of World War 2," he said. Davis enjoys being involved in class, especially by taking photos of events. “I wanted to know about what exciting and fun things other people are doing,” he said. 
Kyle Erickson

Kyle Erickson is a senior at NHS and a staff writer for The Spear. This is Kyle’s first year in journalism and joined because quote, “I really have a passion for hockey and I feel like if I take journalism class I can get closer to that sport and share my ideas about it more.” Some other passions Kyle enjoys are marching band, show choir, and concert choir. Kyle is a big hockey fan and supports North Dakota for college and the Las Vegas Golden Knights for the professional level. Kyle also enjoys action and comedy movies and his favorite movie is “Die Hard.” An interesting fact about Kyle is that he is afraid of some waterslides. Another hobby Kyle likes is going on walks with himself and with his dog Mavrick.
Dulguun Batzaya
Dulguun Batzaya, Staff Writer
Dulguun Batzaya is a senior at Norwalk High School and foreign exchange student with the FLEX exchange program. This is his first year in journalism class, but he is already proving his aptitude in the subject. Being an active member in the school, he is involved in student council, volunteering, and being a cornerback for the JV-Football team. In his free time, Dulguun practices his six-string guitar. Something he aspires to do is pursue a career in Diplomacy and International-Relations. “I was just interested in challenging myself, and learning how it is to spread news to people,” he said.
Taylor Stanley
Taylor Stanley, Editor
Taylor Stanley is a senior at NHS and editor for The Spear. Stanley is a second-year journalism student, and has been published in other publications such as the Warren Town and County News. Outside of the newsroom, Stanley is involved in marching, concert, and jazz band. “Something interesting about me is I have been to six countries outside of the U.S.,” she said. After high school, Stanley said she will attend the University of Northern Iowa majoring in business.
Keegan Johnson
Keegan Johnson, Staff Writer
Keegan Johnson is a junior at Norwalk High School and Staff Writer for The Spear. This is Keegan's first semester in journalism class, and he joined because of a friend's recommendation who had good experiences in the class the year prior. Keegan says he enjoys playing video games, and participates in jazz band, marching band, and rugby. “Something interesting about me is that the rugby team I play for was started by my brother in his sophomore year of highschool," he said. "It is also a unique and fun experience having my dad as the coach of the team even though it can be challenging at times," he said. Johnson said he is also entertaining the idea of playing in college.

Sierra Sammons, Staff Writer
Sierra Sammons is a Sophomore at NHS and a first year Journalism student. When not in a classroom, she enjoys reading, drawing, and playing video games like Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Sammons said that she enjoys collecting snow globes. This started when her father would bring her snow globes of locations from trips he took, and eventually her friends started to bring her snow globes as well. When she asked why she joined journalism, she said “I wanted another class that's focus was art or writing, and so I could avoid gym class.”

Noah Fox, Staff Writer
Noah Fox is a senior at NHS, he is currently taking his first year of Journalism. Noah is interested in Theater, NHS holds many theater activities such as plays, and musicals. He participates in Show Choir, and takes a fascination with singing. He is a tenor. “I want to become an Actor and act in movies/Tv Shows,” he said. Journalism reports on many school activities. Noah Fox said “I wanted to know more about school events”. Noah has not done much traveling outside of the country but travels across the US. He is planning to take DMACC after graduation and join an acting program.
