Norwalk Seniors and early graduates have one week left in order to complete the local scholarship applications. Scholarships provide monetary relief to put towards secondary education for Norwalk seniors and early graduates.
Jessica Garrison directs the Norwalk local scholarship program; Garrison said that local scholarships provide Norwalk students with an opportunity that may give them a better chance than if they were to apply for scholarships nationally.
“State and national scholarships are for anybody, but Norwalk local scholarships are for Norwalk students only, Garrison said.” So it narrows it down to about 250 students, and out of those about only 30-40 students apply.”
Garrison said that there are other resources Norwalk students can use in order to apply for scholarships.
“There’s a lot of different resources for Norwalk students, Going Merry, RaiseMe, we have a list on the counseling website that we get notified about, and I send out any that are sent to me.
Blake Lee, a senior at Norwalk, said that he plans to apply for as many scholarships as he can.
“I’ve been applying for all the scholarships that the counseling center sends out,” Lee said. “Also my parents have been sending me a bunch of scholarships too; I apply for all of them that I can find.”
Lee said that he will use the scholarships for many types of financial help.
“Some of the scholarships go directly to the university I think, so I will use those for tuition and housing,” Lee said. “But some go directly to my bank account, so I am gonna use those scholarships to buy a computer and stuff for my dorm.”
Tyler Stanford, a senior at Norwalk, also says that he is going to apply for as many scholarships as he can.
“I don’t really think there is a downside to applying for scholarships,” Stanford said. “It’s pretty much free money, and anyone that doesnt apply for as much as they can is crazy.”
Stanford said that the funds can help him a lot if he goes to a school that’s out of state.
“If I don’t end up going to a school in Iowa then I am really gonna rely heavily on scholarships; Whether they’re from the university or somewhere else, Stanford said.”
