Norwalk students awoke Monday, Dec. 2, to find snow on the ground for the first time this winter.
The snow began to fall around 3 a.m. and continued until around 10 a.m. Two inches of snow were recorded in Norwalk, marking the first major snowfall since earlier this year.
“I don’t like the snow,” junior Natalia Duggan said. “I was surprised that it snowed today and hope the rest of the season has better weather.”
While the weather has gotten colder in the past month, there isn’t another projected snowfall until December 16th, which The Weather Channel gives a 38% chance of snow as of Dec. 2.
The snow also created issues for some students driving to school.
“It was pretty slippery,” junior Brayden Plourde said. “When I drove in the morning, a lot of the roads hadn’t been plowed yet, so I had to drive slowly.”
Later that same week temperatures rose back up into the sixties.
“It’s typical Iowa weather,” said Keegan Johnson, Norwalk senior. “It’s common for that fluctuation, but I really don’t enjoy it.”
Johnson said that he prefers warm weather.
“Although I live in Iowa, I definitely like the warmer summer compared to this type of winter,” Johnson said.
Last January, Iowa saw a major snowstorm right before the end of the semester, and many students and teachers are hoping something like that doesn’t happen again, as to not interfere with grades.
“I find snow days kind of fun,” English teacher Mrs. Thomas said. “However, this probably isn’t the best time of year for bad weather since everyone is busy.”
