Norwalk show choirs will host a competition at Norwalk High School on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 8:30 a.m to 9:00-10:00 p.m. for middle and high school show choirs to compete.
A group of these Norwalk show choir students and their families will run the event for show choirs around the metro and surrounding areas to perform their 2024 shows.
Norwalk senior Brooke Kimball, member of Norwalk’s varsity show choir, Sound Revolution, said she is excited to watch other schools perform.
“We put in lots of work to prepare ourselves for competitions,” she said. “When we host it, we are able to relax and enjoy other schools’ shows without having to worry about our own placement and performance.”
Norwalk show choirs are not judged at this home competition, so students find it to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Kimball said she is volunteering at the concession stand for the competition.
“It’s a moment for us to give something to other people,” she said. “It’s a really fun time for us to come together. I’m most excited to see Indianola, I haven’t seen them yet and they have a similar show theme.”
Senior Kyle Erickson, member of Sound Revolution, said he is excited to see what other schools have in store for the competition.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for us to see other groups and what else is out there,” said Erickson. “I like seeing all the cool shows and getting to know new people with the same interests as me.”
Erickson said he enjoys hosting the events because he gets to watch more shows.
“It is cool how a bunch of different groups come to you, and you know the lay of the land,” he said. “It’s cool to have a competition at your own school. Glenwood is super good and I am excited to see them perform.”
Norwalk senior Elise Burnett said that even though she is not in show choir, she enjoys watching their events.
“I am going to support my friends in the choir,” she said. “It is a fun show to watch and the people involved put a lot of time and effort into their performances, it is nice to see their growth.”
In addition to the choirs, a band called Norwalk Sound Check performs with the Norwalk groups.
Junior Allie Fuller said she has been a member of the band for three years.
“I like being a band member because it’s a fun way to perform with my friends,” Fuller said. “The best thing about a home performance is when I see the auditorium packed with family and friends.”
